Appalachian Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band
September 23, 2022 | 8:00 pm
The program includes band classics and new compositions. Kimberly Archer is the first woman commissioned to write a work for a presidential inauguration ceremony. “The President’s Own” United States Marines Band commissioned her Fanfare Politeia to be played at President Biden’s inauguration. Michael Markowski’s “City Trees” was commissioned in 2012 by the Lesbian and Gay Band Association to commemorate 30 years of Music, Visibility, and Pride. Two wind band classics, “Children’s March” by Percy Aldridge Grainger and “Trauersinfonie” by Richard Wagner, balance the iconic contemporary “Ghosts of the Old Year” by James M. David, which exemplifies many great musical traditions of the American South including jazz, blues, and shape-note rhythms.
